A Collection of Thoughts
Hello again, faithful readers! I apologize for my absence on this blog. The end of summer has always been a busy time for me, particularly with the school year starting. In addition to that, I also have begun a new project on the radio! Michelle Dunn, Mark Niehaus and I are now hosting a radio show/podcast called Boiling Point and all episodes are posted on SoundCloud. We are on the radio live, Thursdays from 3:00-5:00 PM on WAIF 88.3 FM and we discuss local, state and political issues impacting working-class people.
The Presidency is Back on the Menu!
My last blog post was shortly after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump and it was a lot of doom and gloom. Joe Biden’s candidacy was flailing and the polling was looking bleak. But alas, Joe Biden agreed to end his presidential campaign and now the energy and mood is completely different with Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. She flipped the race on its head and now Trump’s campaign has been exposed as an amateur operation ran by people who have no idea how to win the presidency.
A Breath of Fresh Air
It appears the national Democratic party has woken up and embraced labor unions and working class people, something the local and state party need to do a much better job of. Kamala Harris has been very friendly with labor unions which appears to be carrying over from the Biden administration. It’s certainly a winning strategy and message, in my humble opinion, and I hope it keeps up. The rejection of Josh Shapiro as her VP selection was a major win for teacher unions, thanks to Shapiro’s love of vouchers that spend public tax dollars on private religious schools.
Victory Ahead
This 2024 election is unique in the sense that Joe Biden dropped out months before the election, but the energy has been reminding me very much of 2008 when Barack Obama ran. This energy we are feeling is much different than 2016 and 2020. It appears the Democratic Party has finally blessed the people with what they want: a presidential candidate that isn’t approximately 80 years old and can form coherent sentences when speaking in public. Not a very high bar to clear, but you know how it goes in politics. Progress is quite slow and there will always be people waiting in the wings who feel like they’re entitled to a certain elected office. Despite all of that, I’m quite confident that Americans will reject the MAGA movement for a second time in a row and the GOP will be in absolute shambles.
The Future of the GOP
The national Republic Party is on a path that will end very badly for them on a national level. Many Republican elected officials embraced a two-bit con artist who only cares about enriching himself and obtaining power. Since 2016, we’ve seen any Republican who rejected Trump thrown out of the party. Once Trump takes a beating in November, we will probably see a bunch of elected officials who were die hard Trumpers pivot and distance themselves from him. We as voters and activists should never let anyone forget those who enabled Trump and went along with him and his existential threat to democracy.
Until Next Time
Catch me on the radio at 88.3 FM live on Thursdays from 3:00-5:00 pm or listen to the recorded version here. I’ll try and do better posting blogs here for those who prefer reading the content instead of listening! Thank you for your patronage!
